They were both ignoring the clock on Amy’s bedside table, ignoring the fact that it was time for Ben to leave. But soon enough, Amy rose and walked over to the radiator where she silently took Ben’s uniform from the hanger, giving him an encouraging smile as he slowly dressed.

They walked hand-in-hand to the front hallway. When they reached the door, she wrapped his scarf tightly around his neck. “Now, kiss me and leave.” She grinned up at him, her watery eyes belying her teasing tone.

“Amy—”

“Ben, seriously, I need you to kiss me and leave. I cannot do this, I’m just not strong enough to do this… Please…” she begged, and he nodded and kissed her, hard and fast. She grabbed his shoulders and turned him to the door, practically pushing him out in her grief. He walked quickly to the jeep, his head hung low, and after he’d cranked the motor, he yelled, “I love you. I’ll be back, I promise.” She nodded and waved, and when she had closed the door she fell on her knees and cried.
